1954: Movies Sorted By Tier

... A very good film elevated to greatness by Humphrey Bogart. At 58, he was taken much too young, and this movie shows that he wasn't even close to mailing it in yet. IMDB says he was already quite ill when this was filming, so maybe he really poured in on sensing his days were numbered. Whatever the reason, he tears it up here.
  • Rear Window

... Wow . . . Hitchcock did such a good job of sucking me into Jimmy Stewart's voyeurism that I really felt Raymond Burr was looking at *me*. It's easy to get drawn into all the little dramas that unfold across the courtyard, in addition to the question of whether or not a murder has been committed. Very well acted, but it's hard not to think that Stewart's character is a bit of a moron for his constant rebuffing of Grace Kelly. Oh, and they were both very good, but Thelma Ritter was my favorite.
  • The Seven Samurai

... This gets my vote for greatest epic "western" ever. I'll expand on these comments when I rewatch it.

... As much as I admire Humphrey Bogart--could a short guy with a lisp and not a lick of conventional good looks become the equivalent of a $20M/movie player today?--I can't help but think the movie would have come out better had he not needed to replace Cary Grant at the last minute. While Audrey Hepburn and William Holden have good chemistry, I never really felt any between her and Bogart. Perhaps this was a reflection of what was going on off-camera. Nevertheless a fine romance, even if it didn't quite float my boat.

Hey Jim,

What's the definition of Unranked, exactly? Just curious.

It varies, but when I don't provide any other comments it almost always means "saw it, but so long ago I don't remember it well enough to rank it."
