Well... I must say that i disagree. American Beauty and The Green Mile are rivoting powerful movies that have alot of good things or should i say truthful things about the everchanging condition of the mans psyche.
The Green Mile dissapointed me, the only reason that it did was that it was almost too unpleasant. The better film was Shawshank, and the Green Mile was OK, but only that. American Beauty wasn't a bad film, it was just not as good as everybody else said it was, IMO. This is just my opinion, I am by no means "right" when I speak of these movies, this is just the way I look at them.
the question isn't really whether they were powerful movies saying truthful things... my opinion is, along with AAA, that they are overrated, that doesn't mean they weren't powerful, although i personally don't think the green mile had anything powerful or even worth watching.
I still haven't seen The Green Mile yet, but I agree with the other items here on your list. While I like American Beauty, I also do find the amount of praise lavished upon it quite excessive, especially when Being John Malkovich and All About My Mother were both better films.
Space Balls was lame, and Braveheart, oh boy, don't even get me started.
Good job!
Shalom, y'all!

Thanks, I respect your opinion a lot.
Here is my 2 cents on your list. Green Mile is good, but it goes on too long and the whole thing doesnt stay together enough for that much of a time investment. Shawshank is a much better film but then I dont too many people who would disagree with statement.
Braveheart should never have won the Academy Award. (At least I think it won it) it is an enjoyable movie that meanders too long and Mel really should have watched a few more David Lean Movies to see how epic's should be done.
Spaceballs... yeech, just another example why I yearn for Mel Brooks of The Producers era.
Now American Beauty is another story altogether. The one thing I can say is you really need to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy this movies magnificence. I would have given the Academy Award to Malkovich but I dont think it should detract from the beauty of this movie and its message.
American beauty is by no means a bad movie. It is interesting, and explores characters well, plus it has really nice cinematography. I've been a little hard on the film, which is my little tiny version of backlash from the academy, but it isn't bad. It just doesn't deserve all of the praise it got. It was not the best of the year, and despite many of my friends/fellow film people claims, it is not one of the ten best of the 90's.
my opinion stands on shawshank... but mystic river? overrated? who are you hearing this from? Aside from being nominated for best picture by those idiots at the academy i don't see anyone really praising it... its a very good movie and I've never heard it praised as anything better than one of the years best... and it rarely gets a spot up there... you don't have to like it... but overrated?
...other than that you are spot on... I agree passionatly on every other movie on that list... The Godfather is probably my most hated movie... just becuase of how horribly overrated it is... i know that is unfair... but it's true.
2 movies i've seen on your other lists that i think most people agree should be considered overrated... E.T. and Silence Of The Lambs
Well, Mystic River was the #3 movie overall on critic's top ten lists.
Plus, it had an average rating of 90% at least over at Rotton Tomatoes.
It was very highly praised in critics circles, and around these parts, it's been rated as one of the best movies of the decade by at least one of the members.
As far as E.T. and Silence of the Lambs goes, I think the overall backlash against the films kinda keeps me from considering it overrated.
Plus, I like both films a lot.
I agree with you on a handful of these, and I'm a proud contributor to the overrating of a handful of these as well. Would you mind typing up a sentence or two about why you find these films to be overrated (and if you think they're good but not great, or just plain bad)? That'd be awesome.
I will as soon as I have time, but school is overbearing these days.
I hear ya man.
