Tags:
- Alien (Best I've seen this print look; great sound, and lots of fun extras)
- All About Eve (No extras, but good print; great film)
- Animation Legend: Winsor McCay (Great, early animation; no extras, but print about as good as probably possible)
- Apocalypse Now (Great print and sound; few extras)
- The Battleship Potemkin (As good as this film probably gets; good score)
- The Birth of a Nation (See above)
- Bjork: Volumen (Great videos by a great artist)
- The Bridge on the River Kwai (Great all around)
- Cabaret (The only way to truly see this film nowadays; good extras, as well)
- The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Pretty good print; great score)
- Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Nice transfer featuring a nice print that still really should have been restored; great documentary almost making up for a lack of director's commentary; great science fiction film; like one critic mentioned, as the years run by, Star Wars seems to shrink, while this film seems to grow yet larger)
- Das Boot (Great print, sound, and extras)
- Fantasia / Fantasia 2000 (box set) (Great all around, except for brief instance of Disney censorship)
- Go (Good film, but great DVD; extras galore, with good print and sound)
- Goldfinger (Film not quite as good as I remembered, but great print, sound, and extras)
- The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) (Film a bit disappointing, but pretty good print considering age)
- It's a Wonderful Life (Great print and sound)
- Jaws (Superb in every way)
- Last Tango in Paris (Good print and sound; no extras)
- The Maltese Falcon (Skimpy extras, but good print of a great film)
- Metropolis (AVOID!!! Great film, but lousy print and score; hope Criterion or someone else releases this soon)
- North by Northwest (Perfect all around; a must-have)
- Out of Sight (Great DVD! Lots o' goodies)
- Psycho (Great print and sound; loads of extras)
- Pulp Fiction (No extras; fair to middlin' print; collector's editon on the way should be better)
- Rear Window (Fantastic print of one of Hitch's best films)
- Stalag 17 (good, not great, print; no extras)
- Strangers on a Train (Great print; my version with both American and British version now out of print)
- Taxi Driver (Great all around)
- Thelma & Louise (Good print, sound, and commentary)
- Touch of Evil (Wow! Great print and sound!)
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (Adequate print and sound; no extras worth speaking of)
- U-Turn (It was cheap, and I like the film; good print)
- The Wild Bunch (Bang-up restoration job!)
Author Comments:
My DVD collection, with comments concerning the quality of print, sound, and extras.
Cloned From:

Within your collection are some of the greates movies ever made. Those of which I have printed reviews on. If you have read those reviews, do you think there accurate in your assesment of the films? I have a review of Apocalypse Now coming soon. You have good taste bangsorama!
Thanks! I haven't had a chance to read all your reviews yet; I've commented on the ones I have read, and I will try to get around to the rest of them soon. I've enjoyed each of your reviews, even the one I disagree with (Fargo)! You do good work.
Shalom, y'all!

Hey, thanks for cloning! This is great. Having opinions are easy - the real truth lies in where your money goes (which is not to say I see inconsistencies here - I don't).
Thanks for including quality of print notes - very helpful.
I was trying to decide if I should add Alien or Aliens (or both) to my "to buy" list. I think Alien is wonderful, but I find Aliens so much more rewatchable. I think Alien would a a posterity purchase for me, and I can't afford those, unfortunately.
I've heard great things about the Das Boot DVD. Loved the movie.
Do you rewatch any of these significantly more than the others?
I rewatch North by Northwest, Cabaret, Pulp Fiction, and The Maltese Falcon quite a bit, and I do watch most of the silent ones often as well. I've seen The Battleship Potemkin alot, but probably partly because it is only around an hour long and is perfect for nights where I want to hit the sack before too long.
Glad you enjoy the list!
Shalom, y'all!

Thought you might be interested in this DVD review for Requiem For a Dream.
Thanks, Jim!
On a wonderful note, The Godfather Collection is due in August, and I recently read that a 2-disc double DVD of Metropolis, one including both a recently restored original and the 1984 rock soundtract version, will be released shortly. I can hardly wait...

A note on your Close Encounters acquisition: my wife told me that she heard Speilberg has stated that he will never do a director's commentary track. He feels that commentary tracks detract from the magic. That's the rumor, anyway.
Thanks for the info. Odd choice by Mr. Spielberg, since I'm not sure that a commentary would sully the magic of the film any more than the enlightening documentary did, but the choice is certainly his to make.
It still would have been nice if they had restored the film somewhat for the disc. The transfer was so impressive that it practically screamed for a restoration job. The print on the disc, however, is quite impressive.
Shalom, y'all!

Hey bangs,
Is this list up to date? I remember watching the Winsor McCay with you and loving it! Bertie (Gertie?) the Dinosaur has some real charm, especially when it hurled that boulder onto that elephant or whatever it was that was swimming away!
Johnny Waco
I forgot I had this list!
Nope, this is quite out of date, as you probably suspected. If I get some time at home, I'll try to add some newer discs.
Oh, that Gertie! How she cried when she was scolded!
Winsor McCay is a forgotten genius.
Some of the newer discs I have include Singin' in the Rain, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and Mulholland Drive.
Shalom, y'all!

I have got a question:
Do you know if 'Home Impovement' is available on DVD?
I don't think it is yet, but I am probably the wrong person to ask. I didn't really like the show, so I don't know that a DVD release would catch my eye.
Sorry. Keep your fingers crossed. I am still hoping Moonlighting will show up on disc one day...
Shalom, y'all!
