I'm not afraid to admit the fact that I am horribly underviewed when it comes to movies before 1960. It's not that I haven't tried, but you try when Blockbuster is your only source!

Mr. A, if I am not mistaken, you had a debate with dgeiser13 somewhere else on this site, in which you said that in considering the year of a movie's release, you go by its release in America. Unless you are not using that same system for this list for some reason, I felt I should alert you that although you recently added "Stranger Than Paradise" as a 1983 release, it was not released in the USA until 1984 (in 1983 it was only released in a Dutch Film Festival).
But otherwise, great list you've got going here. Especially nice to see "Duck Soup", "Bringing Up Baby", "Witness for the Prosecution", and "Harold and Maude", all of which are favorites of mine.
One question though - what does it mean when you have a "none"? That you haven't seen any movies in 1934, 1936, 1943, etc., or just that you haven't picked a best one yet? If the former, might I recommend (if you can find them):
1932 - Horse Feathers
1934 - City Lights
1936 - Modern Times, My Man Godfrey
1944 - Double Indemnity, Hail the Conquering Hero, To Have and Have Not
1969 - Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Thanks for alerting me to the Stranger than Paradise tip. I am ashamed to admit that I haven't seen any of the films you suggested. However, I have Double Indemnity sitting right here, so by the end of the week, I'll have a film to enter. I had a feeling, by the way, that Stranger than Paradise was a 1984 release, but I couldn't find confirmation.
No problem; I just checked release dates at IMDB.com. It'll tell you the release date in each country.
And don't feel ashamed. I'm not that acquainted with most of the classic non-comedies either. We're both still young. Most of the movies I recommended are classic comedies: "Hail the Conquering Hero" and "My Man Godfrey" are great screwball comedies (lesser known than "Bringing Up Baby" though), "City Lights" and "Modern Times" are classic Chaplin films, and if you liked "Duck Soup", I don't see how you could go wrong with "Horse Feathers", which is almost as good. Then "Butch Cassidy" is a great Western, "Double Indemnity" is the quintessential noir, "To Have and Have Not" is a very cool thriller with Bogart, and "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice" is a witty satire in which middle aged people try (and fail) to be a part of the sexual revolution of the 60's.
I'm sure Blockbuster has at least some of these films. Have fun exploring!
P.S. I noticed that, for some reason, Diane stopped liking "Laura." I would still recommend it anyway, as a great 1944 mystery movie.
It's not so much that she stopped liking it, but it had faded in memory. Or so she says. ;)
"The Adventures of Robin Hood" replacing "Bringing Up Baby"? Say it ain't so! Don't get me wrong, I love "Robin Hood", but not more than the charming, witty, and hilarious (not to mention influential) "Bringing Up Baby"!
Well, that's the thing...I loved Bringing Up Baby, but it felt like when I watched it, I was missing something. Everybody screams the praises of it, and I felt like a second viewing is on order for me. On the other hand, The Adventures of Robin Hood (which, ironically, I find charming, witty, and extremely influential) felt like a personal discovery. I had no idea I would love that film so much. It's pretty much a matter of expectations, which is an extremely subjective way to look at it, but I go with my gut on lists.
Meantime, any idea who might be the best film of 2004?
"Who"??? OK, I've got severe problems, as I already consider films as people...shudder...
