  • These first three are essentially unrecognised by critics and the public. Twin Infinitives nearly falls into this category but critics do have some acknowledgment, probably because of the TMR influence.
  • Vampire Rodents - Lullaby Land
  • Hash Jar Tempo - Well Oiled
  • Type O Negative - Slow, Deep & Hard

  • Royal Trux - Twin Infinitives

  • Butthole Surfers - Psychic Powerless
  • Red Crayola - Parable Of Arable Land
  • Morphine - Good
  • Foetus - Nail
  • Tim Buckley - Lorca (This is in my opinion the most surprising, with the critics not acknowledging this release at all while being more favourable than the public for his other releases, including the arguably more challenging Starsailor.)
  • Third Ear Band - Third Ear Band
  • Lisa Germano - Geek The Girl
  • The Residents - Not Available
  • Popol Vuh - Hosianna Mantra (This is a Scaruffist choice which I would imagine is not hated by many that hear it, hence its reasonable public opinion. It is however obscure, even by krautrock standards. Popol Vuh do not sound like other krautrockers and so when critics revised their collective opinion on the German music of this period the group was overlooked in favour of other artists such as Can.)
  • Gong - Flying Teapot
  • Red House Painters - Down Colourful Hill (A very accessible album by this list's standards which like Hosianna Mantra enjoys reasonable public opinion purely from its status as a Scaruffi pick causing it to be noticed. If critics find out about this album I'm fairly sure its place in their lists would be assured.)
  • Mercury Rev - Yerself Is Steam
  • Klaus Schulze - Irrlicht
  • John Fahey - Fare Forward Voyages (Critics do seem to know about Fahey but perhaps have a lower opinion of him because of the large amount of material, largely held in low esteem even by Scaruffi, released by him. Arguably another beneficiary of being a Scarrufian pick in that it is now known by the public.)
  • Faust - Faust
  • Nico - Desertshore
  • Frank Zappa - Uncle Meat
  • Pop Group - Y
  • Bruce Springsteen - The River
  • Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica (Critics rate this album so much higher than the public. This is definitely in the top 5 most challenging albums here so the public will never love it. However, its importance has been realised by critics in much the same way as VU & Nico was and so this will remain a critic favourite.)
  • Nick Cave - The Good Son
  • Fugazi - Repeater
  • Gun Club - Fire Of Love
  • Soft Machine - Third
  • Neu! - Neu!
  • Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance
  • Captain Beefheart - Safe As Milk
  • Suicide - Suicide
  • Husker Du - Zen Arcade
  • Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime
  • Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom
  • Slint - Spiderland
  • Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat

  • At this point Scaruffi can be said to be more or less in agreement with other critics and the public. VU & Nico he actually agrees fully with both other critics and the public. Blonde On Blonde he underrates very slightly compared to them but the difference is negligible.
  • Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
  • The Doors - The Doors
  • My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

  • Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde

  • Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground & Nico
Author Comments:

This was compiled by comparing Scaruffi's list with the placing of these albums on Acclaimed Music for the critics and Rate Your Music for the public. I guess I could use record sales as a measure but merely buying a record does not mean an actual endorsement of it; we've all been disappointed by a purchased album before. This is NOT anything to do with how underrated I find these albums to be. For example, Slow, Deep & Hard would be nowhere near what I would consider to be the third most underrated album. This is why I have not called this list most underrated as it suggests personal input. For want of a better title I therefore went for controversy as the title.
