Your Proudest Listology Contribution?

Tags:

I find myself curious . . . Which of your Listology contributions are you proudest of? Try to just pick one, but if you can't feel free to list more. Links would be appreciated, but just plain ol' typing-in-the-title or whatever also works (linking tutorial here). You can just post titles, but reasons would also be great to hear. Oh, and if your proudest moment is a discussion post rather than a list, that's cool too. Just describe where it is, with (optionally) a link to the list that contains the discussion.

Wow, good question. I must think a bit...

This makes me think of a good question I'll post shortly...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I have several I might like a bit more, but I'm going to have to go with my 100 albums list (the top entry is here). I read it over now and I cringe at a few of the reviews. I see missed albums. I think of how I really should change orders (as I've started to do but have yet to complete). I need to expand some of the lower-ranked writing. Etc, etc, etc. However, I really like some of the work (especially on the page linked above), and I think it may have aided some in finding some great new music, which fills me with undescribable joy (no kidding!), so I think (hope) it has been very useful. Yeah, it could be much better, and I have a few lists I like better or are perhaps more useful, but this one came from me, it feels like mine, and it is useful, so it balances both advantages. It is flawed, but for now, I'll go with it.

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I think that might be my favorite of yours as well, although I'll likely switch to your 100 Best Films series when it's completed! If I were you though, it would be a very tough choice. I could have easily picked your Over-rated Films list or your Current Addictions list. Although that last one seems almost like a throwaway idea, it's a concept that's spawned quite a following here. And there are easily at least another half-dozen lists of yours that could be in the running, not to mention the very useful CC and "Notable Films" serieses (serieses?).

Yeah, I love reading your reviews on the 100 Albums and the incomplete 100 Movies list (as well as seeing your selections). Other top contenders would be your Overrated Artists and Overrated Movies lists. They're very ballsy, you took down some sacred cows, and they sure spawned a lot of discussion.

The over-rated lists serve two deliciously selfish goals - I get to vent, and I give all the intelligent people here on the site ample space to change my mind or point out something I missed in a listed item that might sway me the other way. After all, I didn't care much for Exile the first time I spun it.

Thanks!

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I think we must be falling down on the job! I don't recall any removals from any of your over-rated lists to date. :-)

I'm a HUGE fan of your addictions list, I check it regularly, actually (like once a month).

Thanks! I really dig the over-rated lists, but while they tend to earn Amen!s or What?s, I like the idea that the Best list might actually encourage more discoveries. Plus, I find it hard to write about my favorite stuff, and it forced me to do that.

The Addictions list is fun, and I love that others have taken it and run (because I am selfish and I love to read them), but without comments, my Addictions list seems a bit bloodless compared to some of my other lists.

Jim, you WILL be mentioning your own favorite of your lists here, yes?

On second thought, scratch the 'yes' and make it a statement. ;)

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I agree with all that, and yes, I will indeed. See below momentarily...

Alrighty, I actually hinted at my proudest list a day or two ago when replying to your So Close query, but I'll make it official now. I think I'm going to have to go with my Favorite Action Scenes list. It's not heavily annotated, but that's because I really think those scenes speak for themselves, and I'm pleased to have a fairly decent mix of old and new, domestic and foreign on there. Every time I find a scene I can put on there it makes me happy.

My Bombs series is the most fun to write though. Thankfully I don't see all that many movies that qualify for that treatment.

Good lists!

I also enjoy your Disappointing Movies list, and I am in awe over the great idea and response concerning your Secret Santa list, even if my burner-less existence held me back from participating. Ah well, I think I have another birthday I haven't used up yet, maybe even this year...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I love the Action Scenes list, but I think I personally prefer the Bombs. I wish you'd watch more crappy movies!

Thanks! I think. :-) I'm sure I haven't seen my last bomb.

I think I'd have to go with my "Damn, I only have time to watch movies on weekends" series. Some of my comments are pretty lame or rambling, but I think I make some good points now and then, and occasionally some heart shows through (i.e., my "American Pie" review). I enjoy writing my comments on the reviews, and these lists have certainly garnered plenty of discussion.

I also love that list, especially your comments. I also loved your AFI Comedy list, your Which Movies Should've Made the Sight and Sound, especially since it generated such great suggestions and comments, your 50 Albums list (I love seeing what folks are thinking of grabbing), and all your funny lists.

Yeah, I think I would probably go with your Damn series. Great stuff.

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Oh yeah, the Sight and Sound list! I almost forgot about that one. That was pretty popular as well.

The 50 Albums list is really more a selfish list than anything else, to help me keep track of what music I wanna check out. Still, I'm glad at least one other person finds it interesting.

Thanks for the comments!

I'd have to go with your Damn lists, or your AFI list. I think the latter gets the nod from me, actually. I really like the concept of seeing and reviewing all those movies, and I'm impressed that you saw it through! Of course, your Damn lists keep getting better with time, so it's just a matter of time before they overtake the AFI list in my eyes.

I think the AFI list was a good concept, but rereading it today, some of my comments are just kinda lame. I gave a cursory consideration to updating it with better write-ups, but hey, it was one of the first things I did here, and why revise history?

Your Damn list's are very good. A funy thing about them though I sometimes find them too long to wade through. Of course which means I am sure people have the same problem with my own Damn lists.

I guess I'd have to go with my Best 20 Films of... series (which started with the 1950's). I agree with L. Bangs on the need to nip and tuck (I already need to put All About Eve (1950) in and take one out, haven't done the 30's yet, lame comments, etc.), but overall, I like it.

I also really like your Rating series and your list of best directors with their best films.

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I don't know I do so much well that it is hard for me to decide...Ok just kidding but it does seem a little difficult to compliment myself.

I suppose my ABC's list or Damn lists would be the easy choice. I actually like my unfinished 100 best movies list.

I guess I will go with my ABC's of Rock and Roll list

That's probably what I would've gone with myself. If, of course, I had written it...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Yeah, I would have chosen The ABC's of Rock n'Roll, too. I really love that list.

Yeah, for me, as much as I love your Damn lists and your Top 100 list (even incomplete), your ABCs list is my hands-down favorite of yours. Great stuff, all of it!

That's exactly how I feel as well. The ABC list is definitely my favorite of yours, in spite of all the other great content you have.

You know, I really don't post enough to have anything to be proud of. I wish I posted more, but because of time constraints, I'm kind of in and out.

An easily corrected problem! Just hang around here more. :-)

For what it's worth, I got a kick out of your Youthful Indiscretions list.

Hey, didn't you have a rant on "From Justin to Kelly" at some point? I remember thinking that was pretty amusing...

To tell the truth, I have no idea what I would say to this question. I enjoyed covering films last year in my 2002:... series, ending with the NKT Awards. I guess that my annual movie obsessions are my answer, but I'm not really confident in that all.

Yeah, I'd go for your NKT Awards as well, although looking over your stuff I'm amazed at the kinds of numbers your polls have garnered. I think of the top 20 vote-getting polls, half of them are yours.

Great idea, Jim! For me, it's a tie between A Critical Overview of the James Bond Series, With Comments, and the current series I'm working on, Seen in January 2004, which needless to say will be ongoing with each passing month. They're my personal favorites since I've recently embraced advice a friend and fellow freelance writer suggested, and that is writing reviews, daily or weekly, is an excellent writing exercise. I'm extremely happy with what I've posted on those two I mentioned before, and what makes me happiest is my writing style and personality seems to be coming through.

This was fun for me. Hope you like it!

PS - Can I also suggest discussing the one contribution you're least proud of, or the one that makes you cringe and wretch violently?

Those are the lists of yours I love as well, although like AJ's AFI list, I'm impressed with the concept of the Bond list, and think I prefer it slightly based on that alone. But your best writing is in your January reviews, IMO.

Hmm, cringe-inducing contributions, eh? Well, the first thing that leaps to mind is me panning The Tailor of Panama here and then reading LBang's review here and realizing that I just didn't get it.

I love both, and I adored the Bond one enought to rip it off, but I think your January list takes the cake!

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I shall have my revenge on you, lbangs you freakin' plagiarist!

Just kidding. Thank you both, Jim and Banger (you don't mind me calling you "Banger", do you?) for your wonderful words. I recall you (lbangs, that is) writing something about the greatest rock musicians, from A to Z. I tried looking for it under your profile, but I couldn't find it. Anyway, your eloquently-written explainations for each great artist of the alphabet was an inspiration for me to be just as eloquent with my posting...wait, what was that about me calling you a plagiarist?

Hey, I'm glad you like my January '04 movie reviews. I've got a bunch of terrific films on queue to watch, and since the Super Bowl's not on for another week (and I don't have to worry about my Panthers just yet), I won't be as distracted either.

It'll never stand up in court. Come and get it. I own the legal system, baby...

Sadly, in the real world, I must tell you that jgandcag is the author of that terrific A to Z list; you can find a link for it above in geek's 4:23 PM 1/22/04 post.

You can call me any variation of my name you wish, but I warn you, I think the all-too-absent jblack has already used most of them up by now!

Banger might be new. Mash, I wouldn't know about...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

Hey, I'm just happy to see someone confused my meanderig writing with something LBangs wrote. I only wish I could be as clear and concise as the Bangerooski. (where is Jblack, anyway?)

I don't know where JBlack is. He's certainly due for a reappearance!

Hmm...don't know why I thought you had written that.

By the way, I think variations on your name would make an interesting list here, no?

Least proud of, eh? Well, any of the ones I archived would take the prize there.

But how about your most OVERrated list? That would definitely be my Top 11 Favorite Music Artists. 50 posts on such a lame list. My comments on the artists are pretty half-assed and vague, and it's based far more on how many albums I own than on how much I actually like the artist. But I see it as a "necessary evil" because it helps me keep track of that stuff.

my proudest contribution is 'Movie stars who bring in the $$$$$'s' plz check it out.

welldone jim on a great site

:-) Thanks!

jim, is there a way i could change my Log on name?
sorry to bother u

He's away until the 11th. After that, though, I bet you could probably change it. If you want AJDaGreat, though, it's taken. :-)

thank you. im sorry for the questions hehe ;]
thank you for answering my question.

funny you should mention 'AJdaGreat' because their my initials 'Aj' hehe (guessing yours are too ;)

Sure, what do you want it to be?

I think it's probably the Big 500 (which I have done no work on in 2 months). The interesting part being that I'm not especially happy with any of my lists. They're all kinda lame, but I'm trying here.

But I much prefer other peoples post, my personal faves would be (for no apparent specific reason):

Bertie- Philosophy Of Art. It's just way cool.

lbangs- 100 Best Rock Albums(5 parts, 2002 edition).

Stumpy- 100 Reasons To Become A Cynic.

AJDaGreat- 50 Albums I Really Should Get Sometime. Probably the funnest article on the site.

Jim- Movies Sorted By Tier (Series). Best movie reviewer on the site. (Also kinda like the bombs too)

Ash_campbell- 5 Gems Of Asian Cinema. :?\ <---stook wishing it were expanded.

jgandcag- 25 Movies I Wish More Listologists Would See.

AAA- 0019: "And love, love will tear us apart...again" The Best Love Songs of the Past 100 Years. Cool list.

Slipkid71- Directors' Cuts: True Artistic Vision or Money-Making Schemes?.

Taryn- books i loved as a child (and still do).

xfantatic50- name the song.

Tallyho

:?)

P.S.: I do enjoy a post I did a while ago. It's here at the On 03/30/04 at 12:00 AM mark. that was fun.

Nice! This also seems like a cool idea for a list - your favorite of everyone else's content. (Of course, a lot of that spawned from this list anyway...)

BTW, have you read jgandcag's list that won unanimous support from everyone else above? The ABC's of Rock 'n' Roll? It's one of my favorite lists on the site.

Amazing! Thanks for pointing it out. Certainly one of the most interesting on the site.

Tallyho

:?)

Now that I've been here a while, I'll post my own comments here (as I wish more Listologists would do):

I'm proud of the relative completeness of my 'All Movies I've Seen' list (part one & two).

I also like my '50 Short Films to See Before You Die' list because I think short films are woefully ignored on a site with so many film enthusaists as members.

I'm a bit giddy about my unnecessary but somewhat entertaining 'Longest Movie Titles Ever' list because it's by far the most complete list of its kind ANYWHERE.

I think my 'A Short History of' series is pretty fun. It was certainly fun to create.

Though it wasn't as successful as I had hoped, my attempt at Doing One New Thing Every Day was a noble aspiration.

Good stuff. I actually think my favorite of yours was the "one new thing every day" list.

Cool. Perhaps I'll pick it up again once I taste success in some other areas of my life more desperate for it.

No discussion for over a year here...

Ok, here comes mine:

Link. It works pretty well right at the moment. I'm looking forward to see it completed (soon?).

Also my most popular contribution so far, but which is dead since several months. Maybe this will bring it back to life. Hopefully.

What would be yours? (the question sounds a little silly as you run the site)

Good choices, 1922! I do love that alternative 1,001 list you've got going.

As for me, for a single list I think I might have to stick with my answer from two years ago. Certainly I've invested the most in my "Movies Sorted By Tier" lists since then though.

Modest fellow that I am, I've avoided this list - because I thought my choice must be obvious, and it is, it's my famous Great Opening Lines - A Challenge List - easily my most successful list, and the list, I believe, that opened the floodgates for all the 'game' lists since.

Btw, the second descendant of that great original can be found here. There are some good lines on it too :-)

There's not a single list I've made that I'm proud of. They're all just generic lists, nothing special.

For what it's worth, I really like your top 10 by year list.

Thanks. That's the one I should be most proud of then

Though that's pride because someone liked it. It's my favourite sort of pride

My winner is my top 400 trance list, simply because it is arranged such that many electronic newbies come to it and are slowly introduced to a greater world of avante-garde music - the list has a variety of trance-like electronica, ranging from simple epic trance which attracts the newbies, to some very complex ambient dance. It seems to have spread beyond listology as well: I've found links to it on wikipedia and under music links on some internet portals (not to mention forums), as well as quotes from it on youtube, last.fm, and other various sites. Although, it's almost a toss-up with my less popular, but better thought-out top 100 electronic albums list.

the one that got me on listology in the first place
