Essential Homeowner/buyer Books

  • The Virgin Homeowner by Janice Papolos
  • The Walls Around Us by David Owen
Author Comments:

If you are a first-time homebuyer, I highly recommend reading The Virgin Homeowner before you start looking at houses, and certainly before the home inspection (I did not).

The Walls Around Us is slightly more oriented toward the do-it-yourselfer, but it contains a wealth of information, and is laugh-out-loud funny at times. Brilliant.

Okay Jim, what do you recommend if you just had your offer accepted on a house, you haven't read The Virgin Homeowner, and the inspection's in 3 days?

It's a quick read. :-)

Seriously though, the first chapter is only 25 pages, and it's titled "Ground Zero; or What I Should Have Learned from the Home Inspection."

I also wish I'd brought a handy friend with us to the inspection. Our inspector was fine, but shrugged off some stuff I wish he hadn't. While they are there to make sure you don't get screwed, they also aren't likely to screw the sale if not absolutely necessary (that's my impression from my one buying experience, and a couple anecdotes).

Congrats, and good luck!
