Listology Spam Brigade

Tags:

So the spam situation here has gotten pretty bad, as many of you have perhaps noticed. The service I use (Mollom) helps a lot but not completely, and I am trying to avoid adding CAPTCHA to all submissions because I know a lot of people find it irritating. I don't think it would help much anyways, a lot of the spam these days is actually done by real human beings who get paid pennies per comment posted on websites with decent Google rankings. A while ago I deputized AJDaGreat to help as spam cop, giving him the ability to delete spam comments and block spammers. However he has been busy lately and is about to go into law school, therefore I am looking for some volunteers to help out. If you are an active Listology member in good standing and would like to help killing spam, leave a comment and I will get in touch.

Thanks!

GOOD NEWS
As of Thur Jan 2, 2014 -- 4pm PST

We have a workaround for Mollom CAPTCHA blocking valid list updates.

I have to change each user's role to "approved" as they come to my attention.

I've already "approved" several established accounts showing recent activity.

In future, if you continue experiencing problems after saving list updates, respond to this comment.

Mollom spam filter will continue to apply to new users.

Once a user has a history of posting real ham, not spam or fake ham, they can be "approved".

Hello I'm new to this site and I'm trying to clone lists that I like but I either get this error "The word verification was not completed correctly. Please complete this new word verification and try again. If you feel this is in error, please report that you are blocked." or "Your submission has triggered the spam filter and will not be accepted. If you feel this is in error, please report that you are blocked." Is there anything that can be done?

Spam blocking while cloning is a known problem.
You have to be a member for 30 days to avoid spam blocking.
We use the 30 days to detect spammers.
Sorry for the inconveniece.

ahh yes works now :) thanks

Hi, I'm being blocked from adding comments and joining the scoreboard.
Can you help?

kgracetasticsake,

I added "approved" to your user role.

Try again.

- jwalling

everything works now, thanks

The big issue that I'm having and others as well is that we are being blocked anytime we have a link anywhere on our lists. I want to add a link on my new "Movies Watched in 2014" that is already on my "Movies Watched in 2014" list but it won't let me. also "kaplan" is having the same problem with "Films Seen: Listology Scoreboard 2014" sorry but it won't let me put the link in the comments either.

guardianryoga,

@heyrocker made adjustments (Jan 2) to how Mollom works on Listology.

By adding "approved user" role to your account, you should be able to save list changes without getting blocked by Mollom.

Please let me know ASAP if it works (or not) for you. If it does work, I will add "approved user" role to the other users reporting problems updating their lists.

NB: This fix is not automatic for every user. It will have to be applied on a per user request.

- John

Jwalling,
I tried to do the update that wouldn't load after I got this message and wow it saved perfectly. I didn't even get asked to verify or do a captcha.
Once again thanks for your help.

guardianryoga

guardianryoga,

I asked @heyrocker again to adjust Mollom.

I will let you know when I get a response.

To: All concerned

If anyone can't update his/her list, add a link for that list in a comment on this list of lists:
Lists that can't be updated by the author
http://www.listology.com/jwalling/list/lists-cant-be-updated

The list of lists will be used to isolate the cause of the blocking problem.

The blocking problem appears to be limited to the list's author. (I was able to make edits and save using admin/editor roll.) If you, as a non-author, are able to clone and edit a blocked list, add a comment to the above list of lists.

-- jwalling

Heyrocker, valid Listology user edits are still getting blocked - please apply the Nov 10/6.x-2.6 Mollom update https://drupal.org/node/2132717

I just updated the spam-moderation module on Listology. Please let me know if it helps any of your problems. There are some settings I can tweak as well, but I'd prefer to only change one thing at a time in order to have a greater understanding of the problems.

Thanks all.

i get that same message for this list. can't do anything. http://www.listology.com/theunnatural/list/most-beautiful-women-prime

Please put a full copy of the text causing the spam blocking at
http://pastebin.ca
and send me the URL via my contact form.

I want to reproduce the problem and report it to Mollom support.

jwalling

that pastebin site doesn't work for me. just get a blank white page.

There are many alternatives to http://pastebin.ca

Here are a few:
http://pastebin.com/
http://justpaste.it/
https://dpaste.de/

This one has wiki style editing with timeline
http://titanpad.com/

k yep sent

TheUnnatural

I was able to save the previously blocked text from
https://dpaste.de/NE9w/raw/
on Listology, here
http://www.listology.com/jwalling/list/testing-mollom-blocking-2

I was unable to reproduce the Mollom blocking behavior you reported.

I made a diff comparison of the two text versions
https://dpaste.de/eFh2/raw/ and https://dpaste.de/NE9w/raw/
here
http://www.diffnow.com/?report=but4x (report expires in 1 week)

The Mollom blocking behavior is erratic over time.
Sadly, I am unable to demonstrate it to Mollom support thus far.

Postscript:
Listology is using a free Mollom.com account with a traffic limit.
I can't rule out a daily quota limit as the cuplrit.
Mollom support said previously that daily limits wouldn't cause blocking, but I have serious doubts they know that for sure in all blocking cases.

i don't know what this all means :) but err i can't even move 1 line to the next and save it without it being blocked. so i will wait a bit and if i still doesn't work then i'll have to remove the pictures i guess, otherwise its a dead list.

This goes beyond comprehension.

I cloned my test list to
http://www.listology.com/jwalling/list/clone-testing-mollom-blocking-2
saved it and then repeated the bottom section, all w/o a spam warhing.

I then cloned your list to
http://www.listology.com/jwalling/list/clone-songs-episodes-films-testin...
and then repeated the bottom section without a spam warning.

----
Try this: Create a new list without cloning and copy/paste your old list into the new list and let me know what happens.

Your submission has triggered the spam filter and will not be accepted. nope

i tried creating a new list and swapping 1 thing around and then tried it just copying the exact same and both blocked.

To: TheUnnatural and all concerned,

I got an email response from Heyrocker (11/13) and he is on a company trip and he will do more digging into the rejection problem when he returns in one week. He will have a couple of days before making another trip. (Busy guy.) In the meantime, if anyone can't update his/her list, add a link to your list in a comment on this list:
Lists that can't be updated by the author
http://www.listology.com/jwalling/list/lists-cant-be-updated

-- jwalling

Did you want mine again? It's the same list. I did find a work around but would like to put my full list back up.

I want a list that will trigger the spam block with no CAPTCHA.
That's why I need it to be put on http://pastebin.ca
If it's on Listology it doesn't trigger the spam block.

The list I sent you last time is still being blocked with no CAPTCHA. I just rewrote the list from scratch deleting a bunch of stuff. I can send the original list which still won't work to you again if you'd like.

Yes. I need a list that triggered spam blocking w/o CAPTCHA at http://pastebin.ca
Also provide a link to the modified list that was saved on Listology.
Send the links via my contact page.
Thanks

okay I sent the list and the link

I haven't received the links. Please resend with my contact page.

I sent it again, but just in case I'll put it here too

Okay here is the http://pastebin.ca/2474930 list that won't save and has no CAPTCHA option.

The list that I altered to work is http://www.listology.com/guardianryoga/list/movies-watched-2013-0

Thanks for your help

guardianryoga

I was able to save the text from the pastebin
http://pastebin.ca/2474930
to this test page on Listology
http://www.listology.com/jwalling/list/testing-mollom-blocking

I am looking for reproducible blocking so I can show it to Mollom support.

If blocking is not reproducible, it's going to be more difficult to get help from Mollom

- jwalling

jwalling,
That's amazing that you got it to work. I read your comment and checked out the test page, But with my account I still can't get it to save, it wouldn't even let me clone the test page. I'm at a loss, I asked a couple of other users (kgracetasticsake & schwabe) to see if they could clone the list, but they weren't able to either

I have been unable to update my list: http://www.listology.com/guardianryoga/list/movies-watched-2013-0 for a couple of weeks now. I tried it again since seeing that there was an update. I'm still unable to update but the error message now says: Your submission has triggered the spam filter and will not be accepted. If you feel this is in error, please report that you are blocked.

I want to delete one of my list:
http://www.listology.com/nance/list/my-favorite-rock-songs-top-1000

I click delete (before you had to delete twice to delete completely), but they didn't let me, they say:

"Your submission has triggered the spam filter and will not be accepted. If you feel this is in error, please report that you are blocked."

Suggestion for deleting a page that gets blocked:
Replace all the text in each field with one word, like Music, before deleting.

Oh thanks, it works.

I make another try on my list:
http://www.listology.com/nance/list/my-favorite-classical-works-top-1000

I remove one line and add another one.

and it says:
"Your submission has triggered the spam filter and will not be accepted. If you feel this is in error, please report that you are blocked."

I don't see any catcha at the bottom.

Hello, I've started to get this "Your submission has triggered the spam filter and will not be accepted." error on my list and can't update even if I clone my list. Any ideas how I can fix this or what I can do?

I have too this problem.
" warning: Cannot use a scalar value as an array in /usr/local/apache2/htdocs/listology.com/sites/all/modules/cck/modules/text/text.module on line 175.
Your submission has triggered the spam filter and will not be accepted."

Every month I updated my lists, I only have problems with the ones with a lot of hyperlinks. The past months I just have to enter the captcha and evrything was fine, but today they didn't give me that option. Those are the list I wanted to update:
http://www.listology.com/nance/list/my-favorite-classical-works-top-1000
http://www.listology.com/nance/list/my-favorite-rock-songs-top-1000
http://www.listology.com/nance/list/my-favorite-score-tracks-top-1000

I'm trying to reproduce your error.

I tested the spam filter here:
http://www.listology.com/guardianryoga/list/actors-directors-i-dakota-fa...
and was able to save the change.

Provide a link to a page you can't save along with the changes.

Thanks

this is the main one I can't save on.
http://www.listology.com/guardianryoga/list/movies-watched-2013-0
I was messing with it to get it to save and accidentally deleted the contents, while trying to fix the mistake I noticed that if I left out certain films from the list it would save but that would be something like half the list. I tried creating a new list with the same movies listed and it wouldn't save either. If you'd like I could send you the complete list as I have it saved on Word.

guardianryoga

I reproduced the problem you found

I attempted to create a partial list with the pastebin text here:
http://www.listology.com/jwalling/list/test-movies-watched-2013-part-1

I had to remove 6 lines to save the partial list.
The 6 lines I removed are here:
http://www.listology.com/jwalling/list/test-movies-watched-2013-part-2

If you attempt to add any of the 6 offending lines from part-2 to part
part-1, you will see this message:
"Your submission has triggered the spam filter and will not be accepted."

I suspect Mollom is using an acrane algorithm to cause blocking that
has little to do with actual spam.

I asked heyrocker for suggestions and he said he would upgrade the Mollom module which is a major version behind. https://drupal.org/project/mollom

He also said he would be upgrading Drupal core from 6 to 7, but that is going to be a bigger project than a module update.

If upgrading Mollom module doesn't help, the next step will be to contact Mollom support http://mollom.com/support

As soon as I get word the Mollom module is updated, I wiil leave a comment on this discussion.

Put the complete list in http://pastebin.ca/
and send the link with my contact page
http://www.listology.com/user/114939/contact

I will attempt to update a clone of
http://www.listology.com/guardianryoga/list/movies-watched-2013-0

If it doesn't work I will contact heyrocker and/or Mollom

There might be a work around - fingers crossed.

yeh im getting this. Your submission has triggered the spam filter and will not be accepted. oh its because i didn't clcik back to get a new captcha, shouldnt have to do this everytime i wanna submit something on that page. member 3 years

seems to work now.

now im not even getting a captcha. cant post

Sorry, my internet is not working properly as I said, and it once again posted my comment twice!

So, how does this spam filter work?

@Eggman_Walrus_Taxman

How Mollom works:
http://mollom.com/how-mollom-works
Technical whitepaper (PDF)
http://mollom.com/files/mollom-technical-whitepaper.pdf
Mollom API documentation
http://mollom.com/api

Heyrocker is aware of the Mollom ham blocking problem and is considering the options.

Listology uses the free Mollom service which has a daily upper limit. Daily high volumes can cause interference with posting until a new day.

Sometimes Mollom sees ham content as being high probability spam and doesn't offer Captcha. This is a known problem. Most spam blocking schemes handle false positives poorly in my experience. I recommended a method to override blocking to heyrocker, but it would require custom programming.
