  2. • For the purposes of this list, 'electronic/dance' is considered to be a genre of popular music, encompassing a broad range of styles including (but not limited to) the following: progressive electronic, electro-disco, electropop, electro, industrial dance, freestyle, house, techno, downtempo, hardcore, drum & bass, trance, big beat, indietronica, UK garage, dubstep -- and their respective stylistic offshoots.

  3. • It is also important to note that 'electronic/dance' extends into various other musical styles that, while not exclusively electronic in nature, often utilize electronic instrumentation and techniques: ambient, new age, experimental rock, industrial, synth pop, synth funk, boogie, alternative dance, Miami bass, acid jazz, and many others.

Nice list! Some of my favorites are in your Honorable Mentions.

Thank you! It took a good bit of research to compile this. Which are some of your faves?

Great list! I disagree with some, but we're never going to have the same opinions, I can see from the variety that you've considered all the different styles here, and taken your time to listen and research them all, well done!

Thanks for the kind words.

good list! I have a lot of those on my list as well.
Would you really consider the Stone Roses electronic? They really don't use anything electronic in their music.

Yeah, the Stone Roses' debut album is kinda iffy. The reason I included it is because it has very danceable elements typically found in rave and acid house music. And along with New Order and other British indie bands, Stone Roses helped define alternative-dance music.

I would have to agree with you in that Stone Roses is very danceable, and the whole Manchester scene was a predecessor to the rave scene in England. I have considered adding Stone Roses to my list actually.

Get a hold of Northern Exposure by Sasha and Digweed (I'd download, it goes for well over $75 for the real 2 CD set), and where is Faust - Faust?

I do have Northern Exposure and I love it. It's on this list by the way. And thanks for reminding me about Faust. It deserves an honorable mention.

Holy shit, prolific reviewing!

Nice list. Seriously, the scope of this thing is impressive.

Haha, thanks darktremor. Yeah, it took quite a while to compile this baby. I'm pretty confident I've got the majority (if not all) the classics.

Hey, a couple of suggestions and ideas for your otherwise amazing list:

1.Spicelab - A Day On Our Planet (for me the best electronic album ever, and at least should be in top 50 surely?)

2.If you thought a Pink Floyd album deserved a place, how about A Saucerful of Secrets or Piper at The Gates of Dawn over DSOTM?

3. White Noise - An Electronic Storm isn't for everyone, but certainly necessary listening to hear some proto-electronic avante guarde rock stuff.

4. Aglaia - 3 Organic Experiences, Very rare so I wasn't surprised at its omission, but I think you may really like it judging from your overall love of electronic music and ambient.

5.Hybrid - Wide Angle is some great breaktrance that you may want to put in 100-150th place.

6.Air Liquide - The Increased Difficulty of Concentration is a techno masterpiece and essential listening IMO.

Sorry if it seems like I'm nitpicking, just trying to help make a great list even better!

I agree with those. I'd also recommend:

And Steve Reich and Terry Riley so low? And Where is the first Northern Exposure? As AsColdAsIce mentioned, only Expeditions is on there, and I think the first one is really superior.

Otherwise, great list.

Trans-Europe #1? I like your style!

Thanks! Any other album wouldn't make sense.

Yeah; it's not my highest-rated Kraftwerk album (that would be Man-Machine) but it is definitely the most important. Electronic music arguably owes more to that album than anything else. Maybe the technology used to make it was deeply rooted in the 70's, but the ideas turned out to be very ahead of their time.

One album you may be interested in is Haroumi Hosono's Cochin Moon album. Hosono was the founder of Yellow Magic Orchestra, where the idea was to make exotic music using electronics, so the sound would be similar to Kraftwerk or Cluster but the rhythms would be familiar. Cochin Moon was inspired by a trip to Bollywood and the rest of the Middle East and captures the feel of Arabian music quite well; but it's all synthetic. It's an album that's been growing on me with every listen; maybe not one of my favorites, but it's very interesting and doesn't really have any parallels (except maybe the first YMO album).

Glad you agree. And thanks for the Hosono recommendation. I'll be sure to check it out.

I totally forgot about Phaedra. Haven't heard it in years. Love that song!

Have you heard Balance 005 and Involver?

As for NE Expeditions, NE1 and NE2 are much better imo.

Yes, Phaedra is epic. One of my favorite classic electronic LPs, for sure. No, I haven't heard either Balance 005 or Involver yet. I'll get to them one of these days!

It's too much so if you ask me. At college I had a room with bad piping or something that would cause a loud clanking or dripping noise at night that I simply could not sleep through. So I turned to music, figuring I could absorb the entire works of Tangerine Dream in my sleep...it had the right atmosphere but was ultimately too interesting for me to fall asleep with it on. I think "ambient" can be misleading...

Haha...I agree with you.

OMG... it's just so awesome....I couldn't agree with your choices more!
Welllll... I might sneek some Moloko in there, but that's just me =)
Think I'll go scroung up my copy of dubnobasswithmyheadman, haven't listened to that in ages!

lol. Glad you approve of the list! Yes, go listen to some Underworld... NOW!

OMG Underworld! I'm going to relisten to that right now!

Your list is suffering from one fundamental flaw. No. New. Music. There's not a single album on this entire list that was released after 2000 there has been A LOT of great forward thinking artists in the last 9 years that you've completely omitted. Take Burial's Untrue it is both beautiful and completely breath taking both in its scope and emotional impact. Pendulum's Hold your colour was a creative masterpiece coupled with production values which were years ahead of the albums time (most producers are STILL trying to emulate the tones found on Girl in the fire) Also Blank Wave arcade by the Faint was an instant classic for its ability to get even the most jaded of scenesters off of their bar stools and onto the dance floor. Danny Byrd's SuperSize, Radiohead Kid A (It should be a hang-able offense that this album isn't even mentioned) Give up By the Postal Service Play it loud By far to loud the list gos on and on.

Get with the times man ;)

Petey,

Thanks for the suggestions. Hold Your Colour is actually a great suggestion that I'll consider. Untrue is also a magnificent album with plenty of acclaim, but it's a little too soon to tell what kind of influence it may have. Most of the other albums you mentioned aren't significant enough to be considered. Oh, and Radiohead's "Kid A" actually is listed under the honorable mentions.

As for post-2000 albums on the list, you just may have missed:

54. Discovery (2001) - Daft Punk
160. Rooty (2001) - Basement Jaxx
190. Idiology (2001) - Mouse on Mars
192. LCD Soundsystem (2005) - LCD Soundsystem

Look a little harder next time, man. ;)

I'm just going to assume you haven't heard Shpongle?

Because the album "Nothing Lasts...but Nothing is Lost" is undoubtedly one of the greatest achievements not only in electronic music, but in all music of the last couple of decades. I would argue it is the most innovative sound anywhere in the world right now.

Seriously, listen to it, and you'll understand why it should be near the top of the list.

If I were to put any Posford release on the list, it would probably be Hallucinogen's Twisted. Thanks for the suggestion all the same.

I agree, Posford should be on there somewhere - Twisted and Are You Shpongled? were huge albums in the respective genres. The list is pretty accurate, albeit a little mainstream - IMO, Moby should not be on there at all. Leftfield should be higher, that was THE British dance album that everyone drew their influences from, even though I know most of the top 10 are hugely influential albums also.

But most of it is spot on, and very good job!

Love your list! Really makes me think, consider and reconsider. Sure we can all nit-pick here and there, we can all locate gaps and omissions or think some items may not belong. We've all got our own lists, right? As a long-time techno/trance listener who would also want to include Sasha and Digweed's N.E. trilogy way up high, you know what I would pick as #1? Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon. Why? I consider it the first Trance album and pretty near perfect. In 73 I was 14 and hanging out in my older brother's room as usual when he hands me his headphones and says "here listen to this" (he would never just offer something like that). It was DSOTM and it changed my life forever. It eventually led me into Trance many years later. And if you listen to something like S & D's Northern Exposure and DSOTM back-to-back you realize that The Floyd had it all figured out back in '73.

Cheers.

Thanks a bunch, pugwash. It's cool you mention Dark Side; I've actually got it listed under the honorable mentions. It's indeed very electronic and quite influential, as you noted.

good list; lots of good choices. I'm an "old" 60's/70's rock and roll guy so not real familiar with some of the groups and recordings. I appreciate the time you took to produce a list a semi-newbie electronica fan like me can check out. You hooked me when I saw Byrne/Eno MLITBOG. I was a bit surprised Crystal Method - Vegas didn't make the list. One other, if I may offer a suggestion would be King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King.

Actually, Vegas may make the next revision of the list. I didn't consider it before because it didn't get the best of reviews, though it is one of the defining albums of the whole '90s "big beat" movement. It'll probably be included somewhere... just not sure where as of yet.

ITCOTCK uses a bit of electronics, though I'm not sure if it's a crucial selection for the list.

Thanks a bunch for checking out the list, Maccuill. I'm glad you appreciate the time and effort I put into it. =)

I've been raving about the album Era of Diversion by Evol Intent lately. Could you give it a listen and tell me if its just me or is it really good? Also Driving Insane by Black Sun Empire. Both are DnB but with diverse influences.

Are any of the albums on this list DnB? If you could, putting genres next to each album would be useful, well atleast for people like me who explore a genre at a time :)

Btw are you on Soulseek?

karan129,

I'd be happy to check out those albums as I'm always looking for new music to enjoy. The jungle/drum n bass albums on this include:

23. Timeless (1995) - Goldie
38. New Forms (1997) - Roni Size & Reprazent
67. Hard Normal Daddy (1997) - Squarepusher
108. Lamb (1997) - Lamb
114. Parallel Universe (1995) - 4 Hero
121. Black Street Technology (1995) - A Guy Called Gerald
137. Feed Me Weird Things (1996) - Squarepusher
170. Drum 'N' Bass for Papa/Plug EP's 1, 2 & 3 (1997) - Plug
Honorable Mention: Logical Progression, Level 1 (1996) - LTJ Bukem

All of these are essential listening.

No, I'm not on SoulSeek.

Thanks for taking the time to sift out the jungle/DnB albums. I see you have some breakcore on in Hard Normal Daddy. You might have already checked out these albums, but spinmedown16 and sljiva recommended some breakcore and I have to admit its really good. The best would be...

The Flashbulb - Kirlian Selections
Venetian Snares - My Downfall (Original Soundtrack)

edit: Stakka & Skynet - Clockwork album is also worth a listen. Its nowhere near good enough for this list, but it has a few good tracks such as Timelines, 9000 series, Decoy.

2 words - Ninja Tunes.

Hey E-Z,

Just thought you might think about replacing Public Enemy's Fear of a Black Planet with It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back... as the latter was their record which revolutionized rap music...

Other ultra-important rap albums were De La Soul's 3 feet & rising (which you already have on the list).... Nas's Illmatic... Dr Dre's The Chronic.... BDP's Criminal Minded... NWA's Straight Outta Compton... Wu-Tang's 36 Chambers... and two by Run DMC, there self titled debut and their monster followup Raising Hell.

Not sure if you are including many rap albums in your list... and I'm not telling you to add those albums... just letting you know that they are the best rap albums ever made (IMO)....

Hello,

You might find a ton of stuff from my listology page: http://listology.com/barry20/story/top-electronic-music-albums-1960s-pre... along with my tumblr blog http://top-electronic-music-albums.tumblr.com/ (which is the same list but in a more user-friendly format). Check it out and let me know.

Great list! Some suggestions:

Amorphous Androgynous - Tales Of Ephidrina (In my opinion, some of FSOL's best work. Just as good, if not better than Accelerator and Lifeforms)
Cosmic Baby - Stellar Supreme (surprised this isn't on there as it's such an amazing album)
Blue Planet Corporation ‎– Blue Planet
Pleiadians - I.F.O. (Identified Flying Object)
Cosmosis - Cosmology
Astral Projection - Trust In Trance
UnionJack - There Will Be No Armageddon

Hello,

Amorphous Androgynous, Cosmic Baby, Pleadians & Astral Projection are already on my list. I will def check out the other 3 albums you mentioned as I have never heard them. Thx! Amorphous is in my top 40 albums and Cosmic Baby is in my top 75. Pleadians I wasn't a big fan of, kinda boring.

- Barry

Hi Barry,

That post was more meant for enigmazach. Just taking a look at your list now though, it looks great too! Good job.

Great suggestions, friend. My list is currently being revised, and I'll surely consider those albums.

Not sure if you checked out my list yet but if not, def take a look. I'm sure you'll find a ton of albums you might of never heard that are phenomenal. Since I'm not gonna bother with the formatting on this site, click on my tumblr link since it's the same list but in a more user friendly format.

Well, I'll just get down to it...

Yup, 'Tales of Ephidrina' is probably AA's greatest release and will definitely be considered.

Actually, for Cosmic Baby, I'd say 'Thinking About Myself' is probably their high watermark, so I might add that one instead.

For Astral Projection, I'd have to go with 'Dancing Galaxy' over 'Trust in Trance'. It's just more popular and acclaimed.

Of the other albums you named, 'I.F.O. (Identified Flying Object)' is probably the most significant.

I don't really see the others as Top 500 electronic records of all time -- by the way, 500 entries is what I'm aiming for now. Still, great suggestions and thanks for looking through the list. :-)

Just a few albums I suggest you check out:

- Global Communication's "Pentamerous Metamorphosis". 76:14 is one of my fav all-time electronic albums but P.M. is by far their best in my opinion.
- Ulrich Schnauss - Def check out his newest album, "A Long Way To Fall".
- Everything by Shpongle
- Abakus - That Much Closer To The Sun
- Spicelab - A Day On Our Planet
- Andy Stott
- Black Dog, The (former Plaid members) and Black Dog Productions (everything)
- Bonobo (everything)
- Burial's newest EP
- Cujo's Adventures In Foam (aka Amon Tobin)
- Dominik Eulberg (everything)
- ediT's Crying Over Pros For No Reason
- Ellen Allien's Berlinette
- Flashbulb's, The Kirlian Selections
- G.O.L.'s Sensations of Tone
- Infected Mushroom (everything)
- Joris Voorn's From A Deep Place
- Jurgen Pappe's Kompilation
- Kompakt's Total Series (At 12 so far)
- Max Richter (def his first 2 albums!)
- Pantha Du Prince - Black Noise and his collaboration with the Bell Laboratory "Elements of Light"
- Pass Into Silence's Calm Like A Millipond
- Photek's DJ-Kicks & KU:PALM

- Skream's "Skream!"
- Spacetime Continuum's Sea Biscuit & Emit Ecaps
- 1200 Micrograms

I think that's enough to start with...hahaha.

I have a few of those on the list already, actually. I'll check out the others soon, thanks!

Just realized you had the Black Dog stuff and Skream! A few other note:

- You had Ulrich's Strangely Isolated Places but not "Far Away Trains Passing By"? I think that album is his best.
- I forgot the add Aglaia's Three Organic Experiences. It is thee best ambient album I've ever heard!
- If you can find it, Arc of Doves's "Mille Plateaux" is the best dub techno album I've heard. Better than all of the Basic Channel stuff I've heard.
- I didn't see any of Four Tet's stuff on your list too I think.
- James Holden's Balance 005
- For Drum n Bass, check out Plug's Drum'n'Bass For Papa. Also, London Elektricity.
- Plastikman's Musik

Ok, I'm done...sorry. I can talk electronic music for awhile.

'A Strangely Isolated Place' is the more acclaimed album from Ulrich (and perhaps the more popular), but 'Far Away Trains Passing By' isn't far behind. I think one album of his on this list is enough, though.

'Three Organic Experiences' is already listed -- and I agree... it's the best ambient record I've ever heard. ;-)

I'll look into 'Mille Plateaux'. You've got me curious after that Basic Channel comparison.

Four Tet's 'Rounds' is listed.

'Balance 005' is an excellent suggestion and will definitely be added to the Essential Mixes/Compilations/Live Albums section.

'Drum 'n' Bass for Papa' and 'Musik' are already listed. Great albums.

Thanks for reminding me about London Elektricity. 'Billion Dollar Gravy' could potentially make the list.

And that's fine, I can talk electronic music for quite a while myself. LOL.

The Arc of Doves albums is simply amazing! It's dub techno/modern classical/ambient. There's only 50 cd's out there so because of that, it may be hard to find. Let me know if you're able to track it down or not.

Here's some more albums you might not of ever heard of:
- Ada (Adaptations Mix Tape #1)
- Air France (No Way Down)
- Aril Brikha (Deeparture In Time - Revisisted)
- Banco De Gaia (Last Train To Lhasa) - not obscure but a classic and should def be on your list
- Biosphere (Shenzhou) - not obscure either but def an ambient classic!
- Biosphere (N-Plants)
- Boards of Canada (In A Beautiful Out In The Country EP) - Might not qualify for your list but a great EP nonetheless if you haven't heard it.
- Caribou (Swim)
- DAB (Digital Audio Band) - Cafe Del Mar: The Best, Vol 1
- Deaf Center (Pale Ravine)
- Eat Static (Implant)
- Evan Marc (Dreamtime Submersibles)
- Future Sounds Of London (The Environment series) - There's 4 volumes so far. My fav is the 2nd one.
- John Tejada (Parabolas)
- Jonas Bering (Sketches For The Next Season)
- Joris Voorn (From A Deep Place)
- Kiki (Boogy Bytes, Vol. 1)
- Kiki (Run With Me)
- L.S.G. aka Oliver Lieb (Into Deep)
- Michael Mayer's newest album (Mantasy)
- Mount Kimbie (Crooks & Lovers)
- Nightmares On Wax (Smoker's Delight)
- Ozric Tentacles (Strangitude)
- SCSI-9 (Easy As Down) & (Metamorphosis)
- Taragana Pyjarama (Tipped Bowls)
- Telefon Tel Aviv (Fahrenheit Fair Enough)
- Various Artists (Astralworks) - Barramundi Compilation #1: Introduction To A Cooler World
- Various Artists (Mille Plateaux) - Clicks & Cuts, Vol. 1-3
- Various Artists (Ninja Tune) - ZEN RMX: A Retrospective of Ninja Tune Remixes
- Various Artists (Rephlex) - Grime 2

You heard any of these? Check out my tmblr link if you haven't already... I'm actually going to see Gui Borrato this Sat night! Should be an awesome show.

Later,
Barry

So awesome that Amnesiac is in the top 100. It is as underrated as Radiohead are overrated.

LOL, yeah, pretty much.
