Films seen - 2009

  • Overarching theme to my viewing this year: being invited to movies by friends. I was so busy this year with lab work, applying for graduate schools and scholarships, and finishing university, that I did very little in the way of planning social events (including movie days) myself and watching movies while relaxing with my fiancee ("You're renting a movie, Lisa? Just pick something you think I'd like"). All work and bouncing from event to event. There are a few of my own choosing, but this list mostly reflects the taste of my friends and fiancee.

I must be the only guy who didn't like inglorious basterds...then again I did get a torrent of it and it wasn't very high quality, but I didn't find myself laughing much or really thoroughly enjoying it the whole time. The ending was awesome though. I'd give it 3 stars personally.

And I'm glad to see a Dexter fan :).

And to add, how did you not like Bruno? I found it hilarious, and was on the floor crying at some parts. Granted is was not an intellectual movie in the slightest, but come on, he played the part perfectly imo. Me and a few others seem to be the only ones who loved it...

Disliking Bruno might have had something to do with seeing it with my somewhat homophobic brother (who endlessly complained about the dicks in the movie, which sort of killed a lot of it), but at the same time, I also found it not nearly as funny as Borat (I couldn't help but compare), and a lot of the gags fairly lame (IE that whole camping trip) and aiming for nothing but shock value - which doesn't work on me anymore. I laughed a few times though, especially during the Mexican chair people scene. I almost fell over laughing there, actually.

Inglorious Basterds, like all Tarantino movies, is best enjoyed in a theatre - like all movies, sure, but Tarantino films are especially enhanced by watching them at the cinema.
