David Foster Wallace

Writer David Foster Wallace has died. I've heard really good things about Infinite Jest and I have a copy of it on my bookshelf. Has anyone read it?

I've read it and enjoyed it, but it's not a light read. Perhaps a better introduction is his book of hilarious essays: A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again

He is a monster talent and I highly recommend him to anyone that enjoys long expository digressions and sophisticated narratived devices. Infinite Jest is a long read, almost 1/4 of it is composed of footnotes. The Broom of The System is a good place to start if you want something fun and playful; here is is more of the Delillo comparisons you may see. A Suposedly Fun Thing... is a great book of essays as the cruise ship and mass media pieces are hysterically funny and insightful.

Thanks. Actually come to think of it A Supposedly Fun Thing is the book I have. I've heard that Infinite Jest is a monster.

Infinite Jest is actually very readable and it is amazing-- easily the best book I've read since Gravity's Rainbow. Very funny, very strange and the writing is brilliant. I would recommend just reading it slowly, almost like a series of interlocked short stories. I was able to put it down, read something different for awhile, and still pick it back up.
