Why should there be any difference between the movie list and the literary list?

Aha! The EXAMPLES are different. That was going to be my next question :-)

That's right. And before you ask, obviously I didn't throw all this together today; I've had the materials lurking around on my computer for years. It is all my own work, however, gleaned from years (I'd be embarrassed to say how many) of reading science fiction.

This is a fabulous schema and a wonderful way to get through the work day. Any thoughts as to where you'd put Larry Niven's Dreamworld? Utopia? Dystopia?

I'm happy you like the way I've tried to 'map' science-fictional ideas. It's one of the fruits of a couple of decades during which I read sf almost exclusively. Then, sometime in the early 90s, I decided to get a life. No, actually I still don't have a life - whatever that is - but I read a lot less sf than before. Doubtless my map has some omissions and rough edges, which I hope to mend eventually - with a little help from my friends, perhaps.

The most recent Niven I've read is his sequel to Legacy of Heorot (well, his and a couple of other writers'). So I'm unfamiliar with Dreamworld. Sounds interesting if you can't decide whether it's dark or light. Tell me what you think, and that's where I'll put it.

Clearly I haven't put in all my examples yet - I have hundreds of them lined up - but I'll get around to it. I'm currently working on filling in examples for the movie version. Have you been there?

Having a life is severely overrated. :) I'm still undecided about Dreamworld: a futuristic society where AD&D is a televised sport, and the adventurers game their way through an amusement park. I could see the argument for both dystopia and utopia in that set up.

Oh, and there's also a mystery in it.

Thoughts?

The movie Rollerball is a sport-related dystopia - I don't know if there's a book version of it.

Dungeons and Dragons as a 'reality' tv show? I'd say its a dystopia if that's the only thing on the box :-)

I don't have 'mystery' as a sub-genre, do I? And I should have, because there are several sf mysteries. Examples that spring to mind are some of Isaac Asimov's robot novels - The Caves of Steel, for instance. Thanks, friend, for finding this omission for me.

This is really interesting! How about urban science fiction, China Mieville? Or corporate science fiction- Richard Morgan and Derek Jeter's Noir? I think corporate science fiction could be a facsinating genre: Philip K. Dick engages in as well in "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"

Thanks for the suggestions. I already had 'The city' in 'Miscellaneous themes', but, yes, 'Corporate sf' is a good idea. Other examples of it are The Space Merchants by Pohl & Kornbluth, and The Big Ball of Wax by Shepherd Mead. I'm working on adding a lot more examples to this list. Most them will be from 20th century sf, but input regarding more recent works is welcome.
