Author Comments:

You know the drill. Name the song.

And yes, there's a pattern with the answers - either the songs are ordered in a certain way, or they all have a common thread. Guess what it is for bonus points.

Can't get enough lyric guessing? This lyric game is still incomplete, as is this next line game.

No cheating please.

JoeGraham - 7
Cosgrove - 5
dgeiser13 - 4.5
openstacks - 4
P Pogo - 3.5
geek - 3
Imposter - 3
tdunnie - 3
Kza - 2
lukeprog - 2
Conall - 1
heyrocker - 1
socialretard - 1

10. Van Halen - Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
16. Steely Dan - Peg
17. Simon and Garfunkel - Hazy Shade of Winter
20. Queen - I'm In Love With My Car
54. 3 Doors Down - Superman

Well done on 10, 16, 17, and 20! On 54, I'm sure you know the song, but it is actually not called "Superman." Veeeery close, though.

The 3 Doors Down song is called 'Kryptonite'.

You are correct, sir. I'll give you both credit.

#1 - The Afghan Whigs, "66"
#15 - The Beastie Boys, "Girls"
#24 - OutKast, "God"
#38 - PJ Harvey, "The Dancer"
#40 - Gang of Four, "Damaged Goods"

All correct! Congrats!

27 is Prefab Sprout. I have to think about the name of the song.

It is! Here's a little hint. #27 is said in its entirety first, then later in the song each line appears again with the title following. That is, it's "1st line of #27 / title / 2nd line of #27 / title." If that helps.

Nope. I don't think that's gonna do it. Oh well, I've given someone a hint. :-)

It's on Two Wheels Good, towards the middle of the album...

#46 is Come on Eileen by Dexies Midnight runners
#21 is Just by Radiohead
#36 is PDa by Interpol
#5 is Barely Legal by teh Strokes
Thats all I got off the top of my head

Nicely done. That's four for you!

8. Jockey Full of Bourbon/Tom Waits
36. PDA/Interpol
37. Roadrunner/Modern Lovers
48. Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart/Johnny Cash
50. No Particular Place to Go/Chuck Berry

8 - Right artist, right album, wrong song.

36 - I'm afraid JoeGraham beat you to this one by a few minutes. Sorry!

37, 48, 50 - Correct!

8 Tango Till They're Sore

Another alley-oop for Luke!

4. Pocahontas - Neil Young
14. The Way You Do The Things You Do - The Four Tops
29. No Woman, No Cry - Bob Marley

Three for you! I was actually thinking of the Temptations' version of #14, but yours would work too.

26 Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

Another one while I'm updating! Well done!

11. experimental film - tmbg
18. the blower's daughter - damien rice
39. she - gram parsons

Wow, three more so soon! Keep 'em coming, guys! And great job, geek!

13: Nick Drake - Ride

You are sooo close, but I'm being a little anal with this game. It's not called Ride, but it's two words and Ride is the second one.

Okay... my copy of the album just calls it Ride, but I guess the full title would be Free Ride?

That's really weird. I checked the All Music Guide and my version of the album (Chronicle, 2000) and both call it "Free Ride." What version do you have?

Anyway, great job.

ACtually I burnt it off a friend, so I guess it's possible I wrote it down wrong when I copied the tracklisting

#25 -- I believe that's "Lowdown" by Wire (my favorite band of all time)

Oh man, I knew that lyric rang a bell but I couldn't quite place it. That is one of my favorite Wire songs too.

You are correct!

it is hard to believe that nobody pegged #34 - "Day Of The Lords" by Joy Division

Yeah, I thought that was a pretty easy one too. It might be easy to recognize it as Joy Division and hard to remember the song's title, though. But great job!

7. Clubland - Elvis Cosello
19. I Want You Back - The Jackson 5
32. 21st Century Schiziod Man - King Crimson

I was wondering how 19 stayed up there so long. Great job!

#33: "Pusherman" by Curtis Mayfield (how come I didn't see that one the first time through?)

Correct you are!

So, anyone have any idea what the pattern is yet?

3. American Idiot by Green Day. Yes, I'm ashamed I know it too.

lets try some more out

#2 is Brown Shoes Dont Make it Lyrics by Zappa I think

#12 is Tuff Luff by the Unicorns

#23 is kissing the lipless by The SHins(my favortie song on that cd)

Yep, nice job! Good call on that Unicorns lyric, and "Kissing the Lipless" is my favorite from Chutes too!

35. Quicksand - David Bowie
45. Venus in Furs - Velvet Underground
53. Zak and Sara - Ben Folds

Oh and I don't know how I missed this one:
6. 1000 Umbrellas - XTC

That's four for you, congratulations! I liked #35 because if I saw that lyric, I would immediately know it was Bowie but have no clue which song it was from. I dunno if anyone else felt the same way though.

#44 Natural Disasters by Enon. Man, I love that song. It goes on almost every mix I make for someone.

That's how I first heard it! I love it too, and I'm glad you got that one.

Okay, now that the summer is officially over, let's start wrapping this Summer 2005 Lyric Game up.

The lyrics that remain tend to be by fairly indie / obscure bands (at least more so than, say, Neil Young or David Bowie), so I'm not surprised they haven't been guessed yet. The one exception is #3, which I thought would've been guessed long ago. Well, actually I thought one of the British Listologists would've gotten #43 early on too. Plus there are definitely some fans of the band behind #42 around here... but anyway. This has been quite a successful lyric game, and I am pleased. Great job, guys!

Now as to the pattern. I will tell you now that the pattern is not that the songs all have something in common; in reality, they are arranged in a special order. My advice to you is to either (1) look at the first few entries and the last few entries and see if you notice a pattern, or (2) take a big chunk where a lot have been guessed in a row (say, 10-21) and see if you notice a pattern there. Whoever guesses the pattern first will receive 7 bonus points.

Good luck, Listology!
